4 Things to Consider When Buying an Air Conditioner

Choosing a new air conditioner is not as simple as buying a new computer or smartphone. There are some factors you need to consider to make sure that you’re getting an air conditioner that meets your needs. One of the most trusted AC and furnace companies in Tacoma, All Seasons Inc., takes a look at the things you need to consider when buying a new air conditioner.

1. Sizing. “Bigger is Better” doesn’t apply to air conditioners. When buying one, it has to be sized according to your home’s total square footage. An undersized AC would be running at maximum capacity all the time just to meet the least of your cooling needs. An oversized one would be too efficient and cool your home too fast. This will result in frequent stops and starts that mean a higher workload leading to more energy consumption and early failure.

2. Your home’s existing air ducts. If you are getting a new whole-home AC system, check and make sure that your home’s air ducts are in good condition. Leaky and clogged air ducts waste cool air and increase the strain on your HVAC system. Consider whether you still want to use your existing air ducts, or purchase ductless air conditioners for each room in the house.

3. Your heating needs. Some air conditioners have reversible cooling systems that let them double as heat pumps. Depending on your heating needs, a heat pump may help reduce the workload on your existing boiler or furnace. This may result in fewer repair appointments with furnace companies or replacing it altogether.

4. SEER rating. You’ve probably heard this advice many times before: look for the SEER rating when buying an air conditioner. The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating is the ratio of an air conditioner’s output over a typical cooling season divided by the energy used. Air conditioners with SEER ratings between 13 to 21 are ideal; the higher the rating, the more energy-efficient it will be.
