A Comparison between R22 and R410A AC Refrigerants

In 1990, the air conditioning industry came out with R410A, a refrigerant more efficient than R22. In this post, All Seasons Inc. will show the real difference between the two. As one of your trusted air conditioning companies, we’ll help you compare the two products so you can make a more informed decision.

R22

R22 is an older type of refrigerant also known as Freon. It absorbs and releases heat in lesser amounts, and thus is less energy efficient. It also contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer and, as such, is less environmentally-friendly. R22 is no longer used in newly-manufactured air conditioners. Because of this phase-out, acquiring parts and supplies for R22 AC systems is now more difficult and expensive.

R410A

This new type of refrigerant is also known by the brand name Puron. It’s more effective than R22 because it can absorb and release heat in a more efficient manner. R410A is also the more environmentally-friendly option as it doesn’t cause damage to the ozone layer, which is why air conditioning and furnace companies tend to recommend it more. It’s suitable for all newly- manufactured air conditioners with tougher and more durable parts, enabling you to avoid the risk of overheating and breakdowns.

Environmental Issues

The main reason for the shift from R22 to R410A refrigerant is the growing concern for the environment. Leakage in an R22 compressor causes greenhouse warming and an overall weakening of the ozone layer.

After going through the above comparison, you can see how an R410A AC unit is more efficient. This is why air conditioning companies, All Seasons Inc. included, recommend the use of R410A rather than R22.

The production and exportation of R22 will become illegal next year, and in 2030 there will be a complete phase-out. All Seasons Inc. is one of the top air conditioning, furnace, and electric panel companies around. Consult us on how to transition from R22 to R410A.
