Why Is Your Air Conditioner Shutting Off on Its Own?

Your air conditioning system is designed to wind down once it cools your rooms to your desired temperature and go back up again as needed. It should only shut off when done so at the thermostat, which means that if it shuts off on its own, there could be a problem. All Seasons Inc. discusses what causes air conditioners to shut off on its own.

Thermostat Issues

Most air conditioner issues can be traced to a faulty thermostat. It could be due to incorrect settings, bad wiring, or even dead batteries. Following the troubleshooting steps in your air conditioner’s user guide can often save you a service appointment. If the thermostat turns out to be faulty, consider replacing it with a new one that has features like programmable weekday/weekend cycles and compatibility with your smart home system.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Air conditioners use up more energy than most utilities, which is why they may cause their circuit breaker to trip when overloaded. Your air conditioner should have a circuit breaker on its own. Otherwise, it will keep on shutting down on its own. Certified HVAC technicians are qualified to fix electrical connections and yours should be able to correct electrical issues like this.

Overflowing Condensate Drain

The condensate pan collects moisture from the evaporator coil and expels it through a drain pipe, which, if clogged, can cause the water in the pan to overflow. This will trigger the limit switch and shut down the air conditioner. An HVAC technician will need to unclog the drain and sure the drain pump is functional.

Burnt Out Motors

Your air conditioner has motors that run the compressor and blowers that enable air and refrigerant to flow through the system. Air conditioner motors may overheat and burn out, and when this happens, the entire system will shut down. If you notice a burning smell coming from your air vents, turn off the AC and call your HVAC technician.
