Repair or Replace: What to Do With Your Furnace

There are no hard-set rules that will tell you when it’s time to replace your furnace. However, a number of factors can help you determine the better choice between repairing and replacing your furnace. All Seasons, Inc., one of the top-rated heating and air conditioning companies in the area, lists a few considerations that will help you make the best move.

Furnace Is Too Old

On average, a furnace can last 15-30 years before it requires a replacement. That said, one of the first things you should check is the age of your furnace. Typically, a furnace that is less than 15 years old can still get back into shape with adequate repairs. On the other hand, a furnace that has been installed for more than 15 years would likely need more frequent and expensive repairs, so replacing it may be more cost-effective.

Furnace Is Emitting Carbon Monoxide

Often dubbed as a silent killer, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas. It can cause death when inhaled for a long period. So if your furnace is emitting carbon monoxide, you should have it replaced ASAP. Some signs that your furnace may be emitting carbon monoxide include yellow furnace burner flame; excess moisture on windows, walls, and other surfaces; rusting on pipes; and streaks of soot around your furnace.

Furnace Requires Frequent Repairs

If you have been calling furnace companies for frequent repairs (especially major ones), it might be time to say goodbye to your old furnace. Furthermore, damage to the heat exchanger or control module may require the replacement of the entire heating system.

Heating Costs Are Significantly Higher

It’s normal for heating costs to fluctuate. But when you notice unusual spikes in your heating bills, you might want to take a look into your furnace and make sure it’s still running efficiently. Furnaces become worn out over time, making it harder for them to keep up with the demand for heating. This often causes the furnace to use up more energy, which then affects your heating bills.
